Canadian-made Night Navigator™ 8540 night vision system receives first Wheelmark approval for use on high-speed craft.

Current Corporation, a leading manufacturer of marine night vision systems for the global marine market, is pleased to announce their Night Navigator™ 8540 camera system as having achieved the first Wheelmark approval for the Marine Equipment Directive (MarED) for this class of navigation system.

The Night Navigator 8540 is certified for the International Code of Safety for High-Speed Craft, 2000 HSC Code adopted by the International Maritime Organization.  It is now the first night vision system to be additionally certified with the Wheelmark for European installations. This new certificate is mandatory since 2009 for new outfitting of night vision equipment on HSC Code compliant vessels, as part of the European Union harmonization of the safety standards for ship’s equipment, MarED (Marine Equipment Directive) 2008/67/EC, list A.1.

The Night Navigator 8540 is installed worldwide on High Speed passenger and vehicle ferries built at shipyards including Austal, Damen, Rodriquez Cantieri Navali, Fjellstrand, Incat, Strategic Marine, Marinteknik and Derektor. The night vision system incorporates a gated image intensified camera and high-speed lens to gather infrared light. During periods of extreme darkness, the infrared searchlight can be used to illuminate up to 2000 meters ahead of the vessel.

Douglas F. Houghton, President of Current Corporation explains, “The Night Navigator 8540 is the first HSC Code compliant night vision system for High- Speed Craft to comply with this new mandate.  Det Norske Veritas surveyors conducted inspections at our assembly plant in Canada and following vigorous testing certified the Night Navigator 8540 for the MarED Wheelmark. The HSC Tanger Jet II fast catamaran operated by Förde Reederei Seetouristik, Maroc SARL was the first fast ferry to equip its vessel with the newly certified Night Navigator 8540 in June 2009.” The Night Navigator 8540 is also certified by DNV, RINA, the US Coast Guard, the Greek Maritime Authorities and the Hong Kong Maritime Authorities to comply with ISO 16273.

The Night Navigator 8540 is the first night vision equipment published on the MarED website at www.mared.org, index list A.1/4.43.
